Super Bowl III — Oh, my God, Joe Namath and the Jets are actually going to do it.

Super Bowl IV — Chiefs’ Coach Hank Stram wearing a microphone, plus wide receiver Otis Taylor breaking a tackle and high-stepping it into the end zone. And the AFL wins yet again.

Super Bowl V — a genuinely close game with Jim O’Brien kicking a last-minute field goal and repeatedly leaping into the air like a frisky Colt. Cowboys defensive lineman Bob Lilly throwing his helmet some 50 yards in anger and frustration.

Super Bowl VII — Garo Yepremian fumbling the ball into the air as a comedic counterpoint to the Dolphins otherwise perfect season.

Super Bowl IX — the heyday of Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain” who allowed zero offensive points in the big game. Minnesota’s only score came when the swashbuckling Viking defenders blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown.

Super Bowl X — a genuinely close game with Dallas throwing into the end zone on the very last play, and more importantly, with Lynn Swann seemingly flying through the air like a super hero. Two of his catches were all-time classics, and arguably all four were significantly above average.

Super Bowl XII

The heyday of the Dallas “Doomsday II” defense. And I personally think one of the best combined flashes of color with the Broncos’ orange and the Cowboys’ silver, blue, and white. The photo above shows Butch Johnson diving at full extension, momentarily having possession of the ball, breaking the plane of the end zone, but then losing possession when he contacts the ground, in what no way would be ruled a catch in today’s NFL! [although when viewed in real time, it looks like he may have placed the ball down in the end zone]

Unfortunately, Broncos quarterback Craig Morton was injured, did not play well, and embarrassed himself. So, no, it wasn’t a competitive game.

But that’s okay. It showed the late 70s version of the Dallas Cowboys — game played on Jan. 15, 1978 — at full power. The Cowboys had at least five or six familiar names on offensive [and a shame the guys on the O-line are not better known], and at least six or seven familiar names on defense.
