Hello everyone, I'm a 29 year old woman from New Zealand and found out this morning that I have Aspergers. Ever since I was very young, myself and those around me have often suspected I am not neurotypical, no matter how hard I "try to be", however I have never felt the need to see a professional about it as I've always managed. I'm gonna have to unlearn some pretty self-depricating views of myself, and I'm grappling with the idea of learning how to unmask which is terrifying to be frank.

I visited my amazing GP who specializes in mental health this morning to discuss recent increased and unmanageable anxiety and left with a diagnosis of Aspergers and a follow up session to confirm, dive deeper and explore resources. Despite this diagnosis not coming as a surprise, I'm feeling rather overwhelmed, but also very validated. I feel like I finally have an explanation as to why I am the way I am, that it's okay to be the way I am, and I'm not just "difficult", "highly-strung", or "weird".

My doctor recommended this forum as a source of support, and I hope it can be as I don't have much of a social circle and struggle connecting with others authentically. I hope I can connect and learn from others here :)

Welcome aboard.

At least it's only pastelanxiety and not extremeneonday-gloanxiety.

I didn't think it was very funny either.

Hello and welcome from the US! I too felt overwhelmed yet validated when my AS was confirmed (this being 12 years ago already). The anxiety is part of the equation also. I feel ya there.

Welcome to WP! I hope it is a pleasant fit for you.

And, yes, a wonderful benefit of the diagnosis is finally understanding yourself and your life so much better.

Hello pastelanxiety! Congratulations on your diagnosis. Two things surprise me about your post, firstly that you can be diagnosed with autism by a GP in New Zealand. In the UK you would have to go through a long process that involved speaking to a psychiatrist. I don't see this as a bad or a good thing, it's just different. Secondly, I'm pleasantly surprised that your GP knew about this website. You can tell they are good at their job given that they know about specific forums for autistic people.

What are your hobbies/interests?

hi and welcome!
Congratulations on your recent diagnosis. Seeing everything from this new perspective helps with understanding our past, ourselves, and others. Diagnosis was a huge relief for me! Finally so many whys of the past could be understood. Glad you are with us.
