My battery has gone flat but the laptop is plugged in. This coincided with the browsing going really slow on both firefox and chrome.
I tried wiping chrome of all history and cookies but its still slow.

Any ideas?

How about uninstalling Chrome then reinstalling a fresh version?

HMM

I'll try both ,I suspect it's the battery as it was a sudden thing that happened when the battery finally went flat
