Pretty good for a student.
Where is it?

Students here sometimes sleep in closets for over $1200, if they can find one.

Sorry for the spam, but student housing costs (McGill, UT, UBC) are a huge pet peeve of mine.

2 years ago it was $1800/mo for a ground floor ~375sf studio on campus at UBC. Probably more now.

Penthouses are more like $3k for a small one in a low building, $4k+ for a nicer one in a taller building. (On campus, UBC)

A townhouse on campus was something like $5k/mo.

I heard that people splitting tiny rooms in frat houses for the Summer each pay something like $1300. Maybe it is that high I dunno. But that’s a lot for a small shared brick room.. so maybe that number is high I’m not sure.

And there’s a couple year or so waiting list for student housing and none nearby thanks to investors and Airbnb so people pay huge rents just for a tiny bedroom etc.

It’s all just stupid. The entire system needs to be burned to the ground and redisgned.

My son's first year undergrad dorm was something like $20,000.
That was a shared, one room student residence with two beds.
That was without the meal plan.
That was without tuition.

It's total BS.

When I was in Uni I paid $350 / month for a big house with four others.
We had a yard, a private driveway, and a big park about five houses away.
We could ride bikes.
Undergrad tuition was $1500 for the year.
Grad tuition was free.

This is why college degrees are no longer worth their price tag Unless someone else is paying Or you’re in some specialty that Requires the credential And the job is high paying enough for there to be a return on investment.

Otherwise able bodied people may as well just do skilled work and earn their $70-100k or so/year and live life.

I should point out that the academic year is based on 8 months.
His $20,000 half-room was therefore equivalent to about $2500 / month.
They couldn't even open the windows.
They were sealed like at a hotel.
Hydro and water were included, though. So, yay ? 8O

They did have their own bathroom at least, as opposed to communal.
When I was in a dorm it was a communal bathroom in the hallway.

I agree it's not worth it in most instances.
He's an academic so it was worth it for him but most kids, nope.
My other son barely finished high school and makes a fortune as a bartender.
He's lived on his own since he was 18 and eventually moved to the Gold Coast.

My daughter had a few run-ins with various Uni programs, which cost her about $60K.
She never finished any of them because of her disabilities.
She's now making mint bucks working from home using one of her half-degrees.

Here's another one:

https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/loca ... 465?%3Futm

$700 for a very small mattress on the floor next to a window w/ a privacy screen alongside it. I suppose if you're an absolute minimalist.. or maybe if you're quite wealthy with a reason you might need a crash spot downtown, then maybe it's cheaper to have this than a couple nights a month in a hotel.

Still totally nuts, tho.

Another one:

$1200/mo to rent an apartment’s solarium as a room.

it's almost like the system is designed to reward only those people who already have money...

(thinking of education... I guess same goes with housing. Just a nightmare, all around)

AND those who will have money.

Local real estate marketers and developers are already planning for the future when people in my generation will begin to inherit their parents' real estate wealth. "Condo King" Bob Rennie was quoted in a recent article saying that developers need to build condos that first time buyers can afford, in the $1.1-1.5M range, as they inherit their parents' real estate wealth.

Everyone else is screwed.

Agree. Anybody who pays more than 2k rent I automatically have no respect for, unless they are actually rich or had extinuating circumstances that lead to that predicament.

Check this out:

200sf rooms in an SRO hotel with shared bathrooms on each floor that rented for $375/mo to people just barely not homeless are now being cleaned up and re-rented for $2k/mo every time someone overdoses and their body is removed from the building:

Gross. FYI $375/mo was the shelter allowance portion of social assistance (welfare) for a single person. Now that’s what I housed people get and the shelter allowance portion is $500 - but it’s next to impossible to even rent a small bedroom for that as a 1 bedroom apartment now rents for over $3k. Working ppl can’t afford it, either. Partners, roommates, second jobs and side hustles etc just to make rent each month and still be able to eat.

I know a guy with a large moving company. His business operates only within BC. 100% of his business lately is ppl leaving the city and heading North or East - no one moving down to the city because it’s become insanely expensive.
