I used to rely more heavily on alcohol before I had any concept that I was neurologically diverse. I was drinking at night to numb myself to the exhaustion of masking while maintaining a job, the resulting depression and anxiety, and a lot of baggage from my parents and siblings.

I've basically reached a point in my life where I can't drink at previous levels: alcohol is actually a toxin. Even when you're passed out, your body is having to expend energy (that you could otherwise use) to detoxify - while it's still needing to maintain itself. You're doing to your body what society does to us: doubling the work and effort for very minimal perceived benefit. Even without a hangover, I was aware the next morning that I was really dragging.
