One hundred twenty one years ago, today (August 6, 1902), Harry Tracy, the last old west outlaw to capture national attention, had been mortally wounded in a gun battle on a ranch in Lincoln county, Washington state, after having been discovered by a posse while he was laying low on a ranch. Trapped in a nearby grain field, he made his last escape from the law when he put his six gun above his right eye, and pulled the trigger. Tracy had escaped from two prisons, one in Utah and the other in Oregon, had killed eight men (including his partner, Dave Merrill, who had betrayed him to the law in Portland) and had been the subject of the greatest manhunt in American history. He even tried making a get away by stealing a train!
