Jupiter, you have a problem with Uranus.

Jupiter is supposed to be the "bringer of jollity". Hence the word "jovial".
And why the composer Gustave Holst did joyful music for the planet.

(Like Mars is the bringer of war, Venus love, Saturn old age or wisdom, mercury brings something or other.)


I guess that Jupiter isnt always 'jovial'.

^ Mercury is the god of speed who delivers scrolls, so I guess he brings... scrolls.

Just looked up Holst "the Planets".

Yeah, basically.

Mercury is "the winged messenger"

Venus, in his piece is "the bringer of peace" not quite what I said (though Venus is associated with love).

The rest is as I said (BTW his ode to Mars "the bringer of war" was practically cloned by John Williams for the "Star Wars" sound track".

Uranus is "the Magician".

And Neptune is "the Mystic".

And this was before they discovered Pluto. So Pluto isnt mentioned.

I remember in Calvin and Hobbes Calvin and Susie Derkins were assigned as partners to do a school report about the planet Mercury, and Susie was royally freaking out because Calvin wasn't doing any studying or research. When Calvin finally reads out his part of the report to the class, he says that Mercury was named after a Roman god with winged feet, and that he was the god of flowers and bouquets, which is why he's a trademark of FTD Florists. Then Calvin says, "Why they named a planet after this guy, I can't imagine". Then it shows Susie looking like she's going to literally murder Calvin in front of the whole class, and he says, "Um, back to you, Susie."

Yes. I have run across that fact. The original piece was scored in the 1890s. So the original composer isnt around anymore. But apparently sometime in the last century they have appointed someone to compose a segment for Pluto.


I guess that thats artistically legit.

Yes. Today we want space music to sound "spacey"...and science fictiony, and trippy, or alien and avant guard, or like that.

Holst is very pompous and Victorian sounding. Great music that it is though.

And like I said...Hollywood ripped off his Mars for the Star Wars sound track.

The Jupiter theme was a theme song for SOME TV show (not space related) of my childhood, but I cant place it.

i couldn't find it either.

Might have been some local DC area show.

I was thinking that it might have been "Bold Journey". Late Fifties, early Sixties, show showcasing individuals who had taken home movies of their treks to weird places ...like living among head hunters in the Amazon...pretty cool show actually. But I found an episode on Utube with the opening credits and it has different background music. So it wasnt that.

Jupiter is probably upset about the state of its little sibling, the Earth. And fearing humans will start colonising Jupiter any time now
