I am currently reading Looking for Jake, a collection of short stories by China Mieville, who delves a little more into character development than in his novels (the principal weak point of which was always the lack of believable characters, although I loved them in spite of that fact).
All of the stories in this book use elements of horror or magic realism to deal with themes of loss, that common experience we've all had of trying to hold onto something that has had a profound effect on our lives but that eventually left us never to come back.
It's definitely worth reading even if you aren't familiar with Mr. Mieville's other works (although it helps).

Imajica by Clive Barker.
Its supposedly "deep" message is simply hateful and sexist and one of the main characters who is supposed to be admirable is a major b***h, yet Mr. Barker wants us to see this as a good thing.
I hate it, I think the moral of the story is crap, and I can't believe I'm wasting my time with it, but at the same time, Mr. Barker's prose and imaginative detail are keeping me turning the pages.

I'm currently reading a book called Personality, which talks about why people are the way they are.

I'm also reading the current issue of the Reader's Digest.
