It isn't really anything I didn't know already - scent-marking, showing trust and affection, socially bonding.

My cat Mischief loved head-rubbing. In fact I used to head rub him back a lot.

The same reason I lick the biggest brownie. To call dibs.

Because they love us and they have to make it clear to everyone that we are their property!

Cause theyre cute sweet babies!
But seriously...one time we were all in the kitchen while someone was opening a can of Purina (or whatever brand it was) cat food for one of our cats...and tossed the can...and then some one of us held a second... still sealed... can of the brand in front of the cat while she ate...and she...butted her head against the can and lovingly rubbed against it.

We all laughed at how the cat appeared to being showing luxuriant affection for that particular brand of cat food...and joked that we "wished we had caught it on video so we could sell the footage to the Purina company for their use in TV spots" showing an actual cat...endorsing the product.

She was in fact "claiming the can as part of her territory" so I guess it would not have been that far off from "truth in advertising". Lol!
