no autism group in my town

I moved to a new town in arizona recently and it has no autism support group. I'm sick and tired of neurotypical people I've been living with all neurotypical folks for 9 months and I'm sick of it. I'm really bummed theres no autism support group my town and in michigan where I used to live had a huge autism support group. Where are my peeps at????! !!

Would you be able to travel to a larger city in Arizona to go to a group? There must be autism groups somewhere in the area. I'm sorry you are facing this problem.

The US is huge geographically, so it is unsurprising that there will be places where there is no representative autism groups to join.

That doesn't make it any less annoying though, I know.

There's none in my town either.

Can you start a group?

I live in county of one million people. There is one (1) support group for autistic adults. I know because I checked everywhere, and I am friends and acquaintances with experienced autism services providers who would know if there is one. I think a lot has to do with the fact that autistic people generally are not the type of people who would try to create a support group organically; the one I belong to was established by an autism services provider, and even then it was really just offering a space and publicizing it to former clients of the provider. When you are an autistic adult, you are on your own.

I suppose I could but I don't really know where to start and I personally have no desire to meet with other people simply for neurotype. I just want help accessing my special interests but no one seems to be able to do that. "Oh our insurance doesn't allow that." "I like to hire people who've been to school even though people who go to school for this particular career usually have the same position you want to see if school would be a good match for them" "No, you can't have a meerkat. They are wild animals." said person at a zoo holding one on a leash. "No, you cannot pet it" as they pet it.

No therapist, counselor, case worker whatever has been able to help me with any of these. I doubt an autism group could either.

I live in a moderate sized town and as far I as I know, we don't have any. I think there is a support group for parents of children with Autism. Those seem much more common. I have never really heard of support groups for Autistic adults, although that would be a good idea.

Maybe other Autistics in your area know some things about available resources that you don't?

Or...a group of you could work to get some resources made available.

And, in the meantime, you could support each other.

Services for autistic folk are sorely lacking in general.

Denver, CO, and surrounding areas are full of them. CO is actually the best state for autism support. Maybe you can drive or fly from Arizona to one of our Huge functions. There's six per year.

Yep, that's what I do. And, if there are other folks that get on the calls from a similar area, in person meets can always be started.

There isn't any for my "level." I really want to find a young womens group in CT.
