I felt a surprising sense of relief when I heard about it. Maybe I'm taking things too far, but it felt like a strike against the idea that power and wealth entitle someone to get away with anything they want.

It's hard to say, but the independents are probably going to break to whatever candidates aren't convicted felons and he'll be off the campaign trail at times dealing with court appearances. He won't necessarily have to attend all of them, but some he will, he'll need to spend time dealing with the Lawyers either way.

This would be a good time for the Dems to nominate somebody other than Biden and wipe the floor with him. Somebody that could potentially finish off the current iteration of the GOP.

Edit: this could also be a crime that's sufficient to exercise v the 14th amendment against overthrowing the government as these crimes may have been what led to his win.

secret service long ago said that he won't spend a second in jail, they refused to go to jail to protect him. if he gets anything it will be a slap on the wrist in comparison with what others likely would have gotten in the same circumstances.

Yes indeed and typically, he's ignoring that all 34 counts were for falsifying business records.

The testimony from Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen (plus others) provided supporting evidence for that so trying to discredit her and accuse him of lying is a pointless attempt at creating a noisy sideshow. Again, typical Trump.

It might negatively affect the opinion of would-be voters but the rah-rah MAGA crowd would likely see it as a badge of honor.

I'd read of an alternate approach where he wouldn't be incarcerated along with all the other prisoners (can you imagine? ) but would be effectively be held in a form of solitary confinement. That would only require one or two service guys to check he's Ok and still locked up.

A likely outcome, I suspect, much as we'd like to see the orange blimp in an orange outfit.

It doesn't disqualify him from the presidency.

Disqualification requires a majority in both chambers (not sure if it's a simple majority or 2/3 that's required). The GOP controls the House, and Dems only have a 2-seat advantage in the Senate.

Barring that, I'm still worried that his supporters now see him as a martyr, and are now even further emboldened. And if voters who would have otherwise voted for Biden stay home to protest the Gaza situation (similar to "Bernie or Bust" in 2016), he could still win.

Its a sad embarrassing day for America because...a former POTUS got convicted.

But its a happy proud day for America because...just because he was a former POTUS...he didnt escape conviction!

Okay...so he had "88 charges" against him.

Thats 34 down, and fifty four to go.

My impression is that this outcome will energize rank-and-file voters who have long suspected that the trial was politically motivated, as now there will be no lingering doubt in their minds, effectively giving Trump a lock on the general election.

As a convicted criminal he is not allowed to vote in an election but still allowed to run for, and God forbid serve as, President? Sounds like a travesty of justice to me. Convicted criminals are not allowed to enter a lot of countries. Will this apply to him as well if he is elected President?

This has been a lot to process. I had a feeling that Trump would be found guilty on a few of the counts but all 34 just floors me. What is maddening about the whole Trump thing for me is, he has gone throughout life getting whatever he wants by being a bully, a narcissist, and just plain being an awful person. Nothing ever happens to him and even gets praised for his actions.

I do think it's possible this all gets overturned on appeal, but I am hoping not. People will still support him no matter what though, which proves to me The USA is a banana republic with a Gucci belt on it.
