Guess not. But then again, the actual Goths have since vanished into other populations and are gone!

I've been "darkly inclined" off-and-on at various points in my life. In my teens and early twenties I was very much into vampires -- not just fiction and movies, but also folklore and the history of vampire hunts.

I don't want to be goth anymore...

In actuality, it's believed tribal identities among Barbarian peoples frequently changed, based more on allegiance to a particular warlord rather than on birth into a particular ethnic or linguistic group.

I've read pretty extensively on what you could describe as 'barbarian history' and pre-Christian Northern Europe, as well as on the various peoples of the Steppes. Same goes for the Eastern Woodlands of North America.

They're nations and national identities tend to take precedence over ethnic or linguistic ones, but that doesn't mean one's national alliances will remain static. Ethnonationalism as an ideology is flawed to it's core by conflating ethnic groups with language speakers, and with archaeological material cultures, and with national identities when the boundaries between those things tend to be fuzzy.

Whether through bondage or as peace hostages or through intermarriage population groups that interact tend to mix and prestige will play a role in how they identify over time. People will identify with the same barbarians that SA'd their ancestors if those barbarians are prestigious enough for long enough, because they see identifying with that descent and strength as valuable for their reputation. Likewise those barbarians might see so much prestige in the culture of a people they've conquered that they abandon their previous identity entirely and become more Settled than the Settled.
