Today is the birthday of the father of modern horror fiction, H.P. Lovecraft. His influence on horror literature (writers such as Stephen King and Clive Barker acknowledge their debt to him!), art, movies and TV, and even games, is incalculable!

Wow, and I was just thinking of his works in recent days. I didn't know today was his birthday. I wish he could have lived longer and didn't end up broke.

"I stared appalled at the squat, lumpy thing on the table. Its palid surface so rugose and squamous; the sickly, wavering glow that arose from the flaming tips of its stiff, waxy tentacles; the putrid, mephitic aroma that arose when my host - oh, horrors! took a carving knife to this abomination and exposed the fossilised strata of its undying heart."

"That's not nice, Howard. I worked very hard on this cake."
