hOly- i legit just almost fell for a scam.

It was my friend’s account on discord (messaging app) telling me them and their friends had accidentally reported me, along with a screenshot of an email (looked legit to me) that included contact info for the Discord Safety Team
Image
I contacted the supposed Discord staff sent in the email, and got a sketchy response saying along the lines of: “Hello! I’m so and so, part of the Discord safety team. Seems like your account has been reported. I and the team will look at the records. Before we can do so, can you verify your Date of Birth and Country of Origin?”

“nOpe ok bye” removed and reported.

The DOB and Country question is what got me, so I looked up the Discord safety team message and a lot of other people were saying it was a scam, and their account got taken away for at least a couple hours.

I was suspicious beforehand as seen in the photo of the messages. The messages seemed abnormal for my friend, because of the lack of punctuation, the “person” messaging me seemed unfamiliar with me, and the failure to respond to my questions. No matter how panicked they could’ve been, i know they wouldn’t do any of those.
Also how would they accidentally report me, i got a veeery specific username on there.

Anyways, my Discord account looks safe to me, i notified our shared friends not to respond if the friend’ account send the same messages.

Stay safe :)

Yea, I don't use social networking or messaging, just Gmail to contact people. Haven't been scammed yet in 20 years online.

I almost fell for a scam over the phone until I had a meltdown on the phone and started crying. The scam artist said that maybe he'll call back another time. I never heard from that dook again.

I just use a decent browser like Firefox, the free Malwarebytes browser guard and scanner, Gmail and no social messaging.

Ooh yeah that's bad.

The first scam I got I very nearly fell for. Since then I'm a LOT more careful.
