In my case the theory seems to fit the observable facts. By most criteria I'm in good shape for my age, and I drink more tea than anybody else I know, because I like the stuff. It's almost like a stim.

But frankly I doubt that it makes a great deal of difference. It might help a little bit, but I expect there are other factors that affect ageing more. I wouldn't bother drinking tea if I disliked the stuff.

The last thing I would wish for is to prolong my life. Not that it's terrible, it just would be so much better not to have to live in this world. And being old and frail and needing help from strangers is not something I want, at all.

According to the article:

While the study did not delve into the specific types of tea, it found no substantial differences in delayed aging between UK black tea drinkers and Chinese green tea enthusiasts.

I suspect the country you drink the tea in has no effect on its life-extending properties, but you never know.

I seem to remember that green tea is supposed to be more potent in its general health benefits than ornery tea though. And an extended lifespan is probably the last thing you want if your general health is going south. I started drinking green tea mostly because black tea stains my teeth faster than my dental hygienist can sandblast it off, and because I like the taste of jasmine-flavoured green tea. Don't know of any black tea with jasmine. So for me it's great - consume something I enjoy, get whiter teeth, and maybe live longer and feel better. My only slight concern is that tea contains fluoride, and some folks think the amount of fluoride most of us are already swallowing is toxic.

It seems that life-extending interventions are still rather unproven, so if you want to live a long time then maybe avoiding things known to shorten life would be more reliable.

Fun fact: Animal studies suggest that a near-starvation diet gives rats an extended life, and the rats are healthier in their old age. Possibly worth a try if you don't mind being hungry all the time.

It looks like there's a third variable

Hmm........I'd never heard of Metabolic Syndrome before. Is it a really bad ailment?

I'm feeling a bit dippy this morning and can't quite figure out whether they're saying that drinking tea gives you MetS or protects you from it. Which is it?

That's made my day - I'm a mainstreamer 8) I was surprised. I'd have thought alcohol was more popular.

I drink a large volume of coffee until early afternoon and then a large volume of tea - usually Earl Grey. Never have milk or sugar in either.

Do I have all bases covered on the hot beverage front then? :D

I can see how avoiding the sugar might help, but I hope milk is safe. Though in my case I use soya milk, the pure type that doesn't have additives. I gather it's seen as weird to add any kind of milk to green tea, but I see that as an irrational judgement. Millions of people add milk to ornery tea to chelate the bitter-tasting polyphenols, so why not add it to green tea?

There's no accounting for taste though. Wal-Mart sells ready-made tea with sugar already added, for drinking cold. :eew:

Actually Mediterranean diet and coffee among Southern Europeans > north/east European tea drinkers in terms of aging appearance and lifespan.

I've also read that drinking coffee protects the liver from damage by alcohol. I drink lots of tea and coffee, so I'll probably live another 200 years and be able to drink ten pints of beer a day...

What kind of tea are you supposed to drink. I usually have Orange Pekoe tea, which is the most popular kind where I live. A few years ago I kept hearing how tea has a lot of antioxidants, but I doubt it's going to make me age any slower.

Especially since the state of the human race should have made me look like a 97 year old raisin by now.

OK, I'll never drink tea again then.
