I think that depends on whereabouts in the UK you are. I live in London and go to gigs - including low-profile indie ones - all the time. The music scene here is very much alive and well. I think most of the big cities have many options in that area too. Once you get out into the countryside or even the suburbs it's different though.

Yes, Leicester is crap for open mic these days. There's the Soundhouse (which I heard will be closing soon :( ) and a new place that just opened on Regent Road, but that's about all. Used to be possible to perform every night of the week at one time. Seems that Sheffield (my home town) still has a lot of good stuff going on.
