Quote:
The dire wolf is no longer extinct. Meet the world’s first de-extinct animals.
Through the science of de-extinction, Colossal has brought back the legendary dire wolf after more than 10,000 years.

In this video, follow Romulus and Remus, born on October 1, 2024—the first animals in history to be brought back from extinction. Watch them take their first steps, hear their first howls, and see a ton of highlights from their first five months of life in a brand-new world.

You’ll also meet Khaleesi—a little younger, but the very first female dire wolf brought back from extinction.

So, I guess de-extinction is a thing now. :nerdy:

Why are they so dire?

FWIW: Dire wolves are native to the Americas and not to Europe, so they've literally never walked Europe. :nerdy:

Quote:
The dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus /iːˈnɒsaɪ.ɒn ˈdaɪrəs/) is an extinct species of canine which was native to the Americas during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene epochs (125,000–10,000 years ago). The species was named in 1858, four years after the first specimen had been found. Two subspecies are recognized: Aenocyon dirus guildayi and Aenocyon dirus dirus. The largest collection of its fossils has been obtained from the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.

Dire wolf remains have been found across a broad range of habitats including plains, grasslands, and some forested mountain areas of North America and the arid savanna of South America.

Also, as I read more it might be a stretch to describe these as dire wolves, they're GMO-wolves.

Really! ah! so makes sense why they went extinct around the same time native Americans showed up.

Raging argument going on online. According to the scientists they way they spliced the wolf genes it now basically 96% resembles a Dire wolf both phenotypically and behaviourally. As the pups grow they will look like the original wolf that native Americans last saw at the end of the last ice age.

Very interesting but I don't have a chance to watch the vids now but plan to at some point.
A few years ago I read an article about a thought to be extinct female tortoise being found in the Galápagos Islands & there were some expeditions to find a mate but no more were found. I'm wondering why this cloning tech was used to bring dire wolves back instead of being used to give that lone female tortoise some fertilized eggs :? It makes more sense to me to first use this tech to bring back a much more recently extinct species than dire wolves.

^^^ I wonder if it's easier to CRISPR a known genome like wolves? Plus DIRE wolf DNA has probably been sequenced in full in order for the comparative splicing to have been successful.

They're more like grey/dire wolves hybrid, but still an achievement.

^ Some are being skeptic and claiming they’re just Grey wolves with some mutated genes.
