At times my mother has told me basically that I was very practical, other times basically that I was very impractical... so do people think you're practical? Are you?

I think I'm practical enough!

Being practical is irrelevant to yourself or anyone else without freedom/aknowledgment from others.
In otherwords, if no one takes you seriously and just want to have control over you, then you can never apply your logic other than in your own mind. As long as it doesnt get past your skull you will get nowhere in life.
Does anyone else feel they are in a similar situation?

Yeah, I'm the one who does all the little repairs around our apartment block such as changing locks and fixing leaking taps.
