There's a way you can hide the groups you're in, and prevent notifications being sent to your friends about any group-related activity (joining, posting, etc.)... Unfortunately I don't remember exactly how to change the settings, but I had to do it before I joined a couple of groups that I preferred to remain private about.

I'm a member. I figured my friends would think it was to do with having an autistic friend/relative or something. Or maybe some of them would twig, but it didn't bother me really.

Lol, I've mentioned it to a few (in passing, like "Yeah, my mother works with kids with Asperger's Syndrome..." or something similar). They just go "Asbestos? Isn't that like that lung thing?"
...which is why I just smile and think "Hmm, perhaps I won't mention it to him/her then..." ;)
