I also have a sort of hierarchy of interests where I will do a certain amount in depth on a subject and may elevate that interest at the later date.
What is an obsession? If it is just talking about it and think about it a little more than would be deemed just a passing thought then I started thinking about ducks when some mallards flew down besides my window in university, when I was feeling crap. I didn’t start researching ducks properly until a couple years later. I don’t need to think about them all the time it is not dominant interest at the moment. But I am drawn to them, it is a little joke that when I’m in a park with my friends or on my birthday it is just customary to go see them.
I notice some aspies will talk about a particular thing extensively without necessarily getting involved in the intellectual side. It is more of a personal thing. You don’t have to obsess in an intellectualised way.
exactly like i am... i have a lot of non intellectualised sensory obsessions sensations i seek... they are listed in my signature.. then i have only two intellectualised obsessions, powerchairs and assistive technology (both previous words are one category) and stock market

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.
