I currently am up to just over 11 days, with a current record of just over 53 days

btw, for those who don't know, to see your uptime in linux, open a terminal window and type uptime, the screen should display something similar to this

paul@coolblue:~$ uptime
17:47:19 up 11 days, 2:12, 3 users, load average: 0.47, 0.60, 0.68
paul@coolblue:~$

(taken from my computer, as you can tell, lol)

remember, that's only if you didn't know about the 'uptime' command.

As far as i'm aware, the rubbish OS from Redmond doesn't have an 'uptime' command, it probably doesn't need it, lol

What about competing for uptime? if not, why not register yourself here and see how you do (it does involve downloading a small piece of software but that can be easily set up) and have lots of fun

So, what's your current and record uptimes, i've told you mine, so i would like to see yours, hehe

Out of all my computers the uptime record would go to my now decomissioned Dual p100 server running FreeBSD 4.7 It was up 380 days before being shut down to be replaced with a Celeron 400 i got handed down, because the hard drives were wearing out and starting to give errors.

The new box is going well.

FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE (GENERIC) #0: Mon Feb 23 20:45:55 GMT 2004
$ uptime
11:03AM up 27 days, 21:45, 3 users, load averages: 0.05, 0.01, 0.00
$

that's weird it shouldn't say 3 users i'll have to check what's up with that.

There are various uptime utilities for windows. The best uptime record i've seen for windows (2000) was 120 days so it's not as bad as you might expect that was a server my high school i helped look after. I switch my desktop pc off to conserve electricity when not using it though, since this is new zealand where our electricity rates are actually more expensive than what it would cost to pay for the petrol to run a generator to produce the same amount of electricity. So i'm not going for uptime competitions.

anyone else willing to share their uptime

even better are there any windows boxes that have lasted longer than 2 weeks out there?
Also, are there any more linux users out there who would like to share their uptime with the world?

I had to shut my system down due to a thunderstorm, so my uptime has been reset

here it is as it stands now

paul@coolblue:~$ uptime
19:27:16 up 40 min, 2 users, load average: 0.29, 0.43, 0.55
paul@coolblue:~$

I now wish i had an UPS

I have played with a few linex distro i can see why you would want to keep it running no stop. I turn my computer off when sleeping . One of the good things about windozes is it takes less time to boot than most linex boxs.

Using my Mac OS X terminal, I am at 4 days, 19 and a half hours.

My record is way beyond that, don't know but it sure wasn't 53 days. Maybe 15 or so.

I really need to learn the basic terminal tricks. Then learn how to fully use the shell.

I shut down my computer some nights to let it "cool off" and give it a break. I worry that leaving it running indefinitely would damage it...

One of the good things about Linux boxes is that you don't need to reboot.

leaving a computer running indefinately would not damage it unless it was unprotected during a thunderstorm, not connected to any kind of surge and spike protection, or if there was a cpu cooler failure

the only major thing to worry about is how much it will cost in electricity to run the computer (or charge the UPS that the computer is connected to)
