I was wondering if anyone else had weird fears for lack of a better word. I am 31 years old and terrified of the dark. I can't sleep in a dark house but I don't where this comes from. Every night I check the house and closes all the closet doors like I am 5 yrs old all over again. I hate it. Does anyone else have childhood fears like this or am I alone?

it is not uncommon for autistics to hold childhood fears throughout their entire life... usually fears are "imprinted" from a bad event at a very early age, for example someone who is afraid of knives may have been stabbed with one at a very early age... usually imprinting is done up until the brains development is complete at age of 7, by the age of 7 the brain is completely wired, hence why most doctors or neurologists refuse to diagnose someone unless it is extremely obvious autie/aspieness before the age of 7.

i have no imprinted fears although i do have imprinted obsessions/interests

powerchairs, assistive technology, stock market, neurological diseases and disabilities, sensory integration disorders.

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

I'm not afraid of the dark, per se, but the odd shapes and stuff I perceive in the dark...like, if I wake up in the middle of the night, I have to choke back panic that a being (person? alien?) is standing there, watching me sleep. Of course it's just a piece of clothing hanging on my door.

Deep down I still fight the "under the bed" fear. Silly, I know...

I feel weird to admit it, but I am afriad of throwing up. I am terrified of even the prospect of being sick and have been this way virtually all of my life cause I remember being sick when I was very small a few times, and for some really weird reason I am scared to death of it, to the point that I have nightmares, in fact the only true nightmares I have ever had, the only dreams I truly hated, were dreams of me being sick, horrible. :eew:

well i can understand having a small fear for throwing up... in fact im not like scared of it but i definitely do not want it to happen... and not from a fear perspective with me its from a data perspective... throwing up screws you up bad

1. esophagus damage from stomach acid

2. electrolytes get really f****d up because a lot are stored in your stomach (hence why they say when using a G-Tube for feedings to NEVER take anything out from the G-Tube as it will remove electrolytes and really f**k things up, only reason i know this is my old girlfriend whos parents cut me off had a G-Tube and also 2. i will be very likely to need to get one in the future because of how bad my swallowing ability is and because of my inability to gain and maintain weight)

3. it burns!! !

Similar question came up in a different topic today. Are you in therapy right now? Cognitive behavioral therapy's pretty effective at treating phobias, and more and more health care plans will pay for it. A therapist can also be effective in assisting with other autistic spectrum issues such as socialization.

A NIMH pamphlet on anxiety disorders is available from
http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publicat ... nxiety.pdf
(I mentioned this to someone else earlier, but I would advise caution in regard to NIMH's eagerness to push psychoactive drugs, acknowledging that some people do find them useful.)

No I am not in therapy but have considered it. I won't take drugs, there has to be a better way.
