I did the "Aspie-Quiz" just now and my score (for those of you who have done this particular test) was 161 out of 200. A score which, by the way, I find interesting as there were only 149 questions LOL.

My son was recently diagnosed as having AS, and the psychologist suggested I might want to get dxed as well, if I was keen to know of course, as she believed I have AS myself.

Not sure if there's any point, but it might well dispell a few feelings of low self-worth from when I was a child.

This is my profile from the Aspie-Quiz:

My husband's was almost completely opposite!

Cheers,
Fiona

Well, it seems pretty obvious to me that you're aspie.

Does the diagnosis cost anything

IF NO, go get it.

IF YES, then ... what benefit will it provide
Access to funding/assistance?
Self Esteem?

IF this is worth the cost, then go get it.

Otherwise, don't worry. You know what you are.

It costs $450 to be dxed by my son's psychologist here in MLB. 8O Not that I can't afford it, but it appears to be a waste of money in many ways. My hubby says go ahead if I really think I need to know, so the ball's in my court.

For your peace of mind then yes.
I plan to go for one next year and it is about $700.

Since there is no cure or medication, it is not necessary for survival.
The test you took, as far as I was told by the dr. who will dx me, is one of the ones they give you to be dxed (or one similar with 150 questions). They also observe you and talk to you.

I think if you really don't care, or really care to know, then it isn't worth it. You've lived this long with it right?

Of couse my obsessive self needs to hear it from the dr. :o

I'd like a diagnosis, just for closeure. Till then, i can't call myself an aspie..i am just in limbo.
Thing is..I can't really afford one.

I asked my doc when I first heard about autism. I tried to convince her I had all the symptoms but since I appear normal she refused to refer me to a specialist and instead told me I had significant OCD due to being obsessed about wanting to be evaluated. I've been misdiagnosed so many times now that I really don't care whether some doc thinks I have AS or something else.

I was told by several doctors and a psychologist that unless a person needs a diagnosis in order to get services, there is no need for a formal diagnosis, and that, in fact, it is probably better not to have a diagnosis in your file. Their thinking is that few people really understand what it means to have autism/Asperger's and having a diagnosis written in your file might be somehow used against you.

Depends how you want to go...

It's a lot of money to throw away on something you already know.

Why not do the test (which btw is at http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php) and take your answers and results next time you go to the paediatrician. You may get an instant diagnosis without cost, especially if you have aspie children and your partner scores NT.

As I was told, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree"

the odd thing is i only scored 80/200 for AS and 105 for nt this is low and i am very confused. I was diagnosed with as when i was 10 and answered all questions honestly.

I think you should get diagnosed. i dont know how truthful the quiz is since i got diagnoses with as and scored low on the quiz. but there we go.....

This annoys me. I assume New Zealand (if that's where you live, Fiona) has no public health system that includes bulk billing for psychiatrists?

We have that in Australia - indeed, my last three treating psych's bulk billed. I wouldn't have got my Aspie DX without the first one and the psych support beyond that. Thank goodness for Medicare.

The real annoyance is in the US. Medicaid provides no psych support that I'm aware of, and I consider that a human rights abuse (again, if I'm wrong someone tell me!). Diagnosis is important in order to make the adjustment to who you are. I spoke of natural adjustment on another thread.

In short, get a DX. If you can't get it due to money issues - jump on the NZ government about it.

Maybe you're starting to normalize... (just kidding).

No test is perfect but that one is better than some. It's not a complete answer but can sometimes help people who don't have the money to get a dx.

I was diagnosed sheerly out of curiosity and my need to know, no services have been offered and none are available. Even if they were, I doubt I would use them. If you feel the need to know for certain that you're an Aspie, and you want confirmation that you're not just some hypochondriac, then go ahead and get diagnosed.

Strictly speaking, Medicaid and other programs like it are not supposed to exist under US constitutional law. Our government generally does a lousy job at whatever it attempts, so the best solution is usually to limit government's influence over things such as education, healthcare, etc as much as possible.

You must've missed my mentioning that I live in Melbourne. Although writing that as MLB may have thrown you LOL. I guess I could claim against Medicare.....is that possible when going through private psychologists?

I feel the need to be tested for whatever reason....probably so I know that what helps me might help my son....and vice versa.

There was a recent bill proposed in Congress called H.R. 1424 / S. 558, "Mental Health Parity Act of 2007" which would have forced insurance companies and government insurance to cover all 374 mental disorders listed in the DSM-IV. I'm not quite sure why it failed. The emails I got from activist groups implied that passage of the bill would lead to more psychiatric drugging, though it seems that given that increased drugging is already taking place, it should at least not bankrupt the person going through it.
