Good.

You can no longer smoke in cafes in a lot of countries.

A similar law takes effect in Holland on July 1st. Except . . . police officials have publicly stated they'll refuse to enforce it.

You can't smoke in any enclosed public places in the whole of Britain and Ireland.

Or New Zealand.

Or lots of other places.

Who cares?

It will be healthier for the workers now, with less second hand smoke.

Australia has also severely restricted smoking indoors and also within a certain distance of doorways in public places. It hasn't come too soon for me. Nothing is more of a put off in going to public places than stinky smoke from el cheapo cigarettes. I start to cough and splutter and it must be even worse for people with asthma and emphysema.

I saw a classic situation though last year. A young man was smoking under a no smoking sign at the bus depot. He could have been an overseas backpacker and not understood English but surely the picture of a cigarette with a big bar over it would have given him a clue.

Well, ya, smoking's banned other places in the world -- duh -- but my point is that French cafes are world famous for their clientele of sophisticated, smoking intellectuals. Some people traveling to Paris might be particularly planning to light up in a cafe, so this will put a small dent in tourism. (I'm a lifelong non-smoker, BTW.)

There's still the espresso. :) And weather which makes it possible to sit out on the terrace to smoke 8 months of the year, or more in the south !

This is just the majority taking away the rights of the minority. This is unconstitutional and outrageous.

To me, Smoking = Poison sold next to your milk, and a slow self-suicide.

Now, if the state of Pennsylvania would just put a smoking ban into effect...

No, I don't live there, but I know it's one of the states left that allow public smoking. Some courageous restaurants are choosing to go smoke-free on their own. Eat N Park is one of them and I give them major kudos for it. When visiting PA, I know where I can take my family safely to eat. Frankly I can't believe in this day and age there are places that allow indoor smoking.
