Do You Feel Your School Years Were a Waste?
Productive? ha! How about a waste of my frickin' time. From the, well we can't move him up grades despite the fact that he already knows all of this to the 300 level Oceonography class that used the same textbook I used to learn the material myself when I was 7, to the computer teachers that didn't know thing one but would fail me because I didnt' write programs the way they thought they should be done (it didn't matter that mine worked and theirs didn't). Or the fact that when I wanted to learn something all I'd get out of teachers was "We're not there yet. You'll have to wait until the rest of the class is ready for that material." Then after class...we're not covering that this year, perhaps you'd get to cover that in grad school. (of course I was in high school at the time).
So generally... a huge waste of time... I even took the first two years of high school "off"... I'd show up once every other week to take tests, pass them all and go home.

i feel school was for the most part a waste of my time, most of the things i learned as a child i taught myself via books from the public library. im far better at learning things for myself then being taught by other people, personally i feel that learning yourself is what learning is all about.
and other thing with school is that i never felt intellectually challenged and therefore became easily distracted which was a kick in the ass come gcse's when i passed all the exams with flying colours but failed them overall due to the lack of coursework i had completed

One of my favorite songs about the sorry state of affairs at *school* - it was tame in 76, now it could be considered a call to incitement. Yikes.
Well we got no choice
All the girls and boys
Makin all that noise
'Cause they found new toys
Well we can't salute ya
Can't find a flag
If that don't suit ya
That's a drag
School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces
No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks
Well we got no class
And we got no principles
And we got no innocence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes
School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces
No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks
Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not go back at all
School's out forever
School's out for summer
School's out with fever
School's out completely
Alice Cooper

Yes - almost everything I know now doesn't come from school but from the Internet and books I read. School gives you only basic knowledge, you can acquire additional knowledge only on your own. And when you're more eager to learn this additional knowledge, your peers look at you almost with disgust - I remember when I was 14 or 15 and I was attending primary school we're once asked by a psychologist who came to our school to have a meeting with us what our interests were. I was embarassed to admit that some of my hobbies were a bit more serious than simply collecting stamps or posters I also used to have a liking for. I said I was interested in psychology and philosophy (and these were only few of said "serious" hobbies I had then) and I felt a big relief when later I found out that my two school bullies didn't hit upon an idea to mock me because of my "unusual" (in comparison with other people from my class) interests which was expected by me.
I wouldn't say my skool years were a waste cos i did learn certain tings such as mixin up wid ppl, improved me handwriting, takin part in sports related activties but da downside in my skool years was dat i was bullied a lot n would end up in trouble wen really it wasn't my fault dis is why i finished skool at 14 instead of 16.

Agreed. School was nothing but an abusive & restraining environment for myself. I know I would be far better off at the moment if I had been home schooled & avoided public school all together. I socialized enough with friends/neighbors at home. I didn't gain anything through public school - however I lost a lot.

School doesn't do much to prepare you for life, I learned much more about life outside of school than I did in school.
Middle and High school were largely a waste of time for me because they just flew through everything. I didn't have time to apply what I learned in any meaningful way, so I don't remember much of what I was "taught" beyond elementary school.
I agree with that. It was also very very boring = torture. Home schooling wouldn't have been very good for me though, my home situation wasn't a good one either.
the subjects I have or had:
English (a waste)
German (a waste)
French (a wate)
Dutch
History
geography ( a waste)
Maths
Gym
Arts (a waste)
culture art ( a waste)
hand working (a waste)
Technology (a waste)
Computer studies (a waste, unless you dont know how a mouse works)
Economics ( a waste)
nature science
Chemistry
Biology
Physics
Literature ( a waste)
music (fun but a waste)
Politician or something like that, still need to have it. (a waste.)
23 different subjects, 13 were a waste. because most of the bad subjects have more hours, you can say that 60% of everything I had at school was a total waste.
Going off of what wilco did:
English...A WASTE! HECK, I learned what I WANTED to learn anyway. My grammar is FAR better than most! I probably learned upwards of 10 words for every word they TRIED to teach me, and I knew over 80% of all words they tried to teach me already ANYWAY! I ALWAYS read well above grade level.
As for irregular verbs? I didn't even have to know they were verbs! They were just words that meant what they meant, and had their own grammar. It is crazy that they have whole CHAPTERS to describe things that native speakers, like myself, just intuitively KNEW!
I like MY method better! I never really learned that like was a verb, and "to like" was an infinitive. I ALSO never learned that it was "he likes, she likes, they like, we like, etc...." I just KNEW it because I learned it. It was my native language!
So WHY did it seem that they covered that like every year!?!?
Spanish...I didn't like the laziness of spanish speakers, so I never took it seriously. Today, I know more spanish than most.
German...I liked it but it was on MY terms, and I learned more by MYSELF! I started with German II in college and got an A.
French...I learned what I know myself. Some french people have said I speak it well and have a good accent.
Dutch...Never got into it, maybe later. OH WELL, I CAN say Ich kan nicht nederlands.(My apologies if I misspelled words.)
Danish...Learned it MYSELF! Danish people have said I have a nice(Their word means beautiful or handsome) accent, and understand me fine. I understand them also.
Hindi...Learning it MYSELF, and I can read it!
Geography... Never really tried to learn it, but I STILL do better than most.
Maths... Teachers were horrible, and taught too little too late. STILL, I do better than most.
Gym... FORGET IT! Just a WASTE!
Art... WHY? AND, today, I understand media better than perhaps any of my teachers could ever DREAM! As for the actual designing of art, how can you teach that? They never tried. I have YET to see anyone that can easily live up to my standards. OF COURSE, that is the ONE skill in art I LACK!
History...I learned little, and didn't care! Still, a lot of RELEVANT history today I know and many others DON'T!
Culture... Most people teaching it were IDIOTS! My last "teacher" told us a lot of garbage. I knew FAR more than she did! That is SAD!
Metal... Fun, but I could figure out some on my own, and already knew the rest. It was a waste.
Electronics... Fun, but I already knew it all! A WASTE!
Wood... Fun, but I knew it all! A WASTE!
Shop... Fun, but I could figure out much of it, and knew the rest.
Computer classes... Basic/Fortran... Nice, but I QUICKLY surpassed almost everyone in the school, including the department head! COBOL... WASTE, the teacher was an idiot, and nobody even got to compile a program. OH WELL, she gave me a pascal book, and I taught myself pascal!! !! ! I knew COBOL anyway! FORTRAN... WASTE! I already knew it, but got the highest score in the class. WOOPIE! I learned all the rest of the computer stuff MYSELF! This is my CAREER! I have used basic, fortran, cobol pretty little. I DID write programs in 6502,8086, vax 11,pdp 11, C/C++,DIBOL,SQL,PERL,PHP, PASCAL, JAVA, etc.... ALL SELF TAUGHT!
nature science... I don't think I learned anything new.
Biology... I didn't learn anything new.
Music... See ART!
Politics... What a WASTE!
Law... I DID learn some stuff, but one thing I learned was PRECEDENT! That basically means everything else is a TOSSUP! THAT is why law libraries are SOOO large! So a WASTE in the longrun.
Sales... Oh well, GUESS WHAT! My teacher said I was a good marketer but I couldn't GIVE AWAY gold! Basically, I could design campaigns, etc... but wasn't good at personally compelling the user to buy.
