The last few years I have been finding so many amazing bands in the progressive rock/metal genre. I find it sad that some many talented people are ignored while other ass clowns make millions because of marketing alone(yes, I realize prog bands have marketing as well, but not in the same way).

Some of my favorites in no particular order:
Dream Theater
Andromeda
Porcupine Tree
Devin Townsend
Ayreon, Stream of Passion, Abeon, Elfonia
Cynic
Symphony X
Shadow Gallery
Liquid Tension Experiment
Dark Suns

Post any cool prog(or close to) bands that you know of.

I'm a really big fan of Tool. I've heard them referred to as prog rock although I know too little of this genre to know if they are or not. Whatever they are, they're amazingly good.

I'd add "Opeth" to that list and "Jag Panzer". "Nevermore" might count as well. If you like Symphony X, try Kamelot too.

Tool is actually Math Rock...a type of Prog Metal. Yet, that band should be up there on that list. Spock's Beard is good too. Oh, and I love Mr. Bungle (crazy, but still considered Prog Rock/Metal). And what about King Crimson? Okay, they're old...but they are still kicking (beep). Check out, "The Construktion of Light" for proof.

I add Rush, if im wrong, let me know.

Bleeding Through is known as a hardcore band, but i would say they have a prog rock element to them because of Marta's haunting keyboard playing.

I've never heard this term so I looked it up. Here's part of what it said

'Lyrics are generally not the focus of math rock; the voice is treated as just another sound in the mix.'

Whether Tool are math rock or not the lyrics are definitely not secondary to the sound, they have fantastic lyrics and the singer sings them with such passion and emotion. I'm not trying to start an argument here, just wondering what you think.

One of my favourite websites is www.progarchives.com .I have found many good bands on there. I dont really like the 70's stuff, mostly after 2000. Some albums i like are, Vanden Plas - Christ 0, Mind's eye - A gentleman's hurricane, and some other bands like The Mars Volta, Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree, Riverside and Phideaux.

I like Tool too.

Parabol/Parabola and Stinkfist are real winners if you want Prog. Metal IMO.
