When Is a Humorous Site Not So Funny? Autism Speaks Has Its Say

oday, the Whose Planet Is It Anyway blog ran a piece entitled Autism Speaks Silences Autistic Child. The blog asserts that:

Autism Speaks got pissed off because [14-year-old] Kelly, [a child with autism], built a parody website, NTSpeaks, which humorously suggested that interventions for certain annoying and intolerant behaviors of the non-autistic population might be in order. The site was designed to resemble Autism Speaks' website.

Well I just read that it was a cease and desist letter, letter warning that if the http://ntspeaks.org was not taken down, that the owner would be sued. http://ntspeaks.org is now offline.

It was NOT a lawsuit... all it was is a Cease & Desist / Website Takedown Order (C&D-WTO)

Those go out very commonly from these so called "mega corporations"

I find them irritating and dumb!

Making a whopper out of a website topic

Parodies are a legitimate way of criticising the status quo, but the mirror held up to those in denial can be cracked by the offended party.

A shame.
