Quote:
A Chinese cosmetics company is using skin harvested from the corpses of executed convicts to develop beauty products for sale in Europe, an investigation by the Guardian has discovered.

If you ever wondered where that collagen in your beauty products come from...

Well, the cosmetics matter will ultimately be decided by consumers willingness to pay for it. As for using organs from executed prisioners, I wish politicians would get their act together and start doing that here. There's a huge transplant waiting list to take care of and it would also provide an incentive to clear out death rows across the country.

Absolutely sick 8O . I hate China - they have got some of the most horrible policies. Check out the one-child family policy for starters.

And Sean, you haven't let me down. Your response was as sensitive and compassionate as always.

Hmm... People's Republic of China.

Got a kind of socialist ring to it. What you think, RobertN?

Socialist Communist being a contradiction in terms. Socialism being the path to a communist world. Sort of like temperate permafrost, or alcohol free beer. Methinks they protest too much.

Things like this are very scary.
If you read any books or watch TV shows where sacrafices of people are required to maintain a stable society, whether for
A) Population control (Read- The Lottery)
B) To appease some overlord (Religious sacrafice, or Stargate comes to mind, where they fed people to wraith so that they wouldn't attack the main civilization)
C) To save lives of others

What happens when the dregs of society runes out tends to be the need for the creation of more. People are scared into obedience, and the crime rate goes down... But the need for bodies tends to go UP (more people reproducing = more people needing to die to balance it for population control, a higher percentage of sacrafice, or a growing number of enemies. A higher population of victims needs more people to be sacraficed to save them.)
Those stories tend to end up with shady dealings, where the government creates false crimes, or outlaws rediculous things in other to increase the body count. They use these ways to remove political opponents and dissenters.

A dead body can not tell refute a lie.

We must NEVER forget basic human rights, or it'll come back and bite us in the rear end in the future, when somebody decides to abuse it.

Not so much as the cosmetics, although that's rather... Sickening as well, but the organ harvesting, which is something people are more inclined to accept.

Just wait untill we can clone humans.
Then when we can control what age we are.
It can be great.
And it can also be scary.

Hey, that slipped my mind! That explains where they plan to harvest aborted babies from.

Note: This is not an approval of the practice.

Ascan, China is not, and never will be, my idea of a socialist society. It is more like fascism now, rather than anything else.

Fascism and Communism are almost the same thing. Compare Hitler and Stalin, both were supposedly polar opposites and yet both killed millions.

When the government has it's boot on your neck it doesn't matter if that boot is left or right. Both right and left ideologies can be totalitarian when taken to their extremes.

Yeah, I figured that. But, what you have in China is what you'll get by applying your socialist principles to the existing political framework. Rather than have large corporations in control, you have an authoritarian state. Both are as potentially nefarious as the other.

How about some Libertarian Socialism :) :

Reckon that might be up vetivert's street, too.

Not to mention the male-to-female ratio they have going. Male children are prized over female children there, so they are more liekly to be allowed to live. According to this site, "The Liaoshen Evening News reported in July that in one township of Liaoning Province the male-to-female sex ratio had reached 306:100 for second children born between 1992 and 1999 (a normal sex ratio is about 105:100 at birth) This is a more recent article addressing the same problem. I'm not sure of the exacte figure currently (the first article is from 6 years ago, but the second one said it still exists and is recent) but ti's still pretty awful.

Oh yeah, I bet part of their effort to harvest colagen from dead babies will involve stinging nets across rivers. [/sarcasm] What the hell is wrong with the Chineese?!? The Taiwaneese don't do that stuff.
