What do you answer when you meet someone in the hallway or on the street and they say 'Hey, whats up?', pauses slightly and then continues walking?

I used to get flustered trying to think of what to answer. Then for a while I would just say 'nothing' because it was the only thing that there was time for (and because I didn't think they really wanted to know what was up). Now I just smile and say 'hey'.

What do you do? What do you think is expected?

I usually do some smart ass reply.

For example:
"The price of crude"
"My blood pressure"
"The sky"

etc. The one I hate is "How are you doing?" ... though, my cure for that one is to tell them, in excruciating detail.

When the question of "what's up" comes at me, I usually throw it back.

Friend: "Hey man, what's up?"
Me: "Sup"

There's not enough time for me to formulate a more meaningful response. That's fine, because a more meaningful response is not expected.

Someone once asked me "How are you?" I replied, quite literally:

"It was a cold night in September, 1980. My parents..."

The asker instructed me to stop right there. Apparently, the specific details of my existence, (HOW I am) vis a vis my conception, were not what she wanted to know.

Usually, if someone asks me what's up, I look up and say, "Everything." I'm 5'1", so it works for me.

Usually I respond with "not much, you?" The question comes at me so fast I can't come up with a different reply. However, when the rare occasion does arise, and I am able to think of a response, I go with something along the lines of what Fretion suggested.

...I have GOT to work on those run-on sentences.
