Mine would be Alice Walker and work The Color Purple. I don't know why I like this book but I've always loved books that were from a different time period and each character has their own idiosyntricity. I also love the colorful descriptions of the old south. It wasn't just because this book dealt with women and race, it was just a good book.

Gail Simone & Anne McCaffrey are two that have at various times made me feel a warm glow in my happy place. J.K. Rowling has also achieved that at some points, even if her writing can often be stronger on plot than on the way it's actually written...

I liked Madeleine L'Engle back in the day. If there is a female equivalent to H P Lovecraft out there I would LUV to read her stuff-do tell me if any of you know.

Oooh, strongly seconded. I was getting worried there for a second, realizing that all my favorite authors were male...

But I'd have to say my favourite is Agatha Christie. I know, I'm a geek. :)

I'll add another one. OK, I have the guilty pleasure of reading Anne Rice books. I love the way she describes and uses words that draw a picture. There are times however when she gets wordy. I also had a question for men and women. Do you usually care what gender the author is when you set out to buy a book or does is not really matter to you.

The reason I mention this is a lot of the Harry Potter books have always been popular to children. The author, Joanne Rowling said she used her intials after having it published so that boys would also read her book.

No, it doesn't matter to me if the author is male or female. But I noticed that I tend to favor the works of a lot of male writers. BTW, I also loved Anne Rice's novels. My favorites were the Taltos series.

Love the Taltos series. My other favorite is the vampire chronicles. I don't know why, but most of my books are from male authors. I don't usually look for the name unless it's a good author I like.
