LMAO! Yeah, we had a group that used to come to our school and sing heavy metal Christian songs... they were dire.

I really don't like rap and R&B- more because of the lyrics and the whole 'b*tches' and 'ho's' attitude, although I can't stand the music either.

Most of the popular stuff played on the radio seems horrible. There's exceptions - The Edge has played Blindspott, Salmonella Dub, and Fat Freddy's Drop - but mostly it's crap. I don't listen to the radio anymore, I have other ways to find new music without having to sift through the irritating s**t.

I think there's good music in every genre. For example, I recently found some good instrumental hip-hop, despite hating most hip-hop bands out there.

I also think regge/dub, hip-hop, rap, techno and trance are all very easy to do very badly. Nothing annoys me like really bad rap or horrible techno.

--jazz (especially the slow-moody-lone-saxophone-type)

--anything overly wordy; music can't be enjoyed properly if your left brain is over-stimulated

--most R&B, especially commercial radio type R&B with no momentum

--most British bands, I don't know why. I love most types of 90's alternative music, but bands like Oasis just make me sick. Coldplay isn't that great either. Nor are the Beatles, from what I know of them.

I dislike:

*...it when idol singers make a personalised version of a national anthem.

*crappy bubblegum rock/pop/rnb- aimed for the supre crowd

*J-dance

*badly remixed music or poorly done covers
that were better off on its own.

*one of those little bands trying to be trendy by having stupid names

*blaaaand acoustic rock music (matchbox 20, sum41, spider bait)
that sounds music for car commericals...

Glam Punk, I think The New York Dolls or D Generation would count but I don't really know too much about the genre because I think it's terrible.

I'd have to say Trance because it is 5 beats repeating, it has to be the most easiest type of music to compose.

Trance has the experimental side to it where many of the leading artists try to push edges in terms of synthesis. It reached a stalemate in and around 2001 where it got formulaic but a new sound in the genre is bringing back the fun and the trance, while dropping the epic aspect.

Look dink, I like the whole 70s jazz fusion funk thing. In fact, I have danced around in my underwear to Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Sister Andrea" more times than I will ever admit to. But your all-inclusive assessment of the rest of jazz as being "entirely major key and obnoxiously upbeat" with "zero potential for being dark and brooding" is just plain wrong.

Just to name some various standards off the top of my head- "Take Five" is mostly in Gb minor with a moderate tempo, Billy Holliday is rarely upbeat ("Don't Explain" and "Gloomy Sundays" come to mind), Gershwin's Summertime (Yes, still a form of jazz) is neither major nor obnoxious, and the song "Strange Fruit"....just how more dark and brooding can you get?

Perhaps your obnoxious, overly happy impression of jazz comes from the well-known big bands of the 40s like Cab Calloway and Artie Shaw. During wartime, people wanted upbeat music- but I can understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea today.

It's a shame though- those guys put some great stuff out there, but I know not every cat is hep enough to dig that jive.

I tend to judge music based on my emotional reaction to it AND what thoughts/feelings it evokes in me-not to mention the atmosphere. Most Jazz, EVEN IF its in minor key and has gloomy lyrics like "strange fruit" just isnt evocative for me the way Depeche Mode and (very early)U2 are.I cant really explain it any further than that.
