There is an idea I have which combines the governmental force of socialism, with the efficiency of the free market. I haven't thought of a name for it yet, but it goes like this...

People would not pay taxes to the government, but there would be the government goons which would force you to give a percentage of your income to charity. You could pick which charity to give to, but the charity would have to be approved by some committee which would be elected by the people to ensure that corrupt or evil charities couldn't exist. You'd still pay a similar amount to what you pay in taxes, except not to the government.

Basically, what this would do is cut out the middle-man of the bureaucrats and politicians and put people directly in charge of how their money is allocated.

"what about that poor man starving on the streets?", you ask.

No problem! Just increase the percentage of your charity-tax allocation to the salvation army.

Feel bad about the Katrina disaster? Then increase allocation for the Red Cross!

And no one will get away with not paying, because if they do the government goons will pay you a visit and throw your ass in jail.

We didn't lose 400,000 of our best citizens in WWII and then risk nuclear war for 45 years straight just to implement the same systems we fought against all that time!

An interesting idea, but I prefer state controlled welfare myself.

The workers elect a member(s) to the board.
The board elect a CEO.
The owner still owns the company.
