I have always felt we have a special bond with animals, I just seem to have a connection / understanding with them...

I'm not so sure. Maybe it feels that way more for people on the spectrum.
I quite frankly find my 2 cats to be a pain in the butt at times. Other times tho when I am upset they just seem to KNOW and come to me.

And my favorite title (an AS book for children): "All Cats Have Aspergers' Syndrome"

There's also an excellent article in the March 2008 issue of National Geographic about animal intelligence: "Inside Animal Minds"
