Hello. I am 28 years old and have begun to suspect that I may have Aspergers. My husband's niece and nephew have AS and it is highly likely that my husband has it as well. After research, not only do I believe my mother has it, but I believe I may as well. Reading all the available research has left me feeling as if I'm not alone. Meeting my husband felt the same way.

I can't stop thinking about topic and find myself with butterflies in my stomach. I'm not nervous about the stigma, because as far as I'm concerned it's nothing to be ashamed of. I think I'm more nervous that it feels as if a new world is opening up before me. Before I always felt different, as if I really didn't belong.

Nervous as all heck, but hopeful.

Thank you everyone for being so welcoming. I have not been diagnosed with AS, but it's nice to be surrounded by similar people.

I had asked my aunt who is a child psychologist if she knew of any AS resources in the county and she said

Quote:
"Frankly, I do not see any signs of you having Asperger's. There are distinct features of the condition that I have never seen in you, fortunately. I would be shocked if you received such a diagnosis, and would deeply question anyone who would make such a diagnosis."

She then recommended that I look into obsessive compulsive, attention deficit disorder, bipolar, and Tourette's.

Does this mean that AS could not be a possibility? Or that maybe she's looking at the parts instead of the whole? I feel hurt by her quick dismissal. I am not very close with my aunt, but I do respect her professional opinion. I don't know what to do.

Edit: I would much rather be diagnosed with AS than OCD, ADD, bipolar, and Tourette's. Geesh.

If you feel like you need to know for sure, I think you should ask for a professional diagnosis by a psychologist/psychiatrist who is an expert in Asperger's and the autistic spectrum. As good as your aunt may be in her profession, it seems a little hasty to dismiss you so quickly.
