Henry Cow

Tangerine Dream (I do stop listening after a certain point, though - I still haven't ventured much past Stratosfear)
Pink Floyd (my favourite Floyd albums are different from most - Piper, Saucerful, Ummagumma)
Yes

I'd say that most HARDCORE Pink Floyd fans like "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" the best out of all of Pink Floyd's albums.

Faust
Les Rallizes Denudes
Ruins / Koenji Hyakkei
Keiji Haino/ Fushitsusha
Magma

I also liked Primus' 'Suck On This' release, because it was all done live, w/o any of the studio frippery that was evident on their other releases.

Also, although this is more than 5 choices, I also like:

Boredoms
King Crimson
The Residents
Can
Brian Eno & David Byrne (The Catherine Wheel)
Glen Branca
Stinking Lizeveta
Last Exit
Sun City Girls

I don't have Ummagumma, and I'm sure that I need to fix that problem.

I love The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. As whole albums, it's hard to pick between that and Meddle. Meddle has "Seamus", but The Piper also has "Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk", so I don't know.

:o :o :o

What are your favorite Les Rallizes Denudes recordings? I have the CD of Yodo-Go-A-Go-Go, and the rest is mp3's. Heavier Than A Death In The Family is good, and Mars Studio 1980 has some great tracks. Do you like "Smoking Cigarette Blues"? The quality of the recording on Yodo-Go-A-Go-Go is atrocious, but I can figure out through it that something awesome was indeed going on.

Fushitsusha's Pathetique is great.

:D

Can made some of the best music ever.

And Glenn Branca.

I think 'Heavier Than A Death In The Family' is fantastic, as is 'Blind Baby Has It's Mother's Eyes'.

A modern San Francisco band called Wooden Shjips has a definate LRD influence coupled with Jim Morrison style vocal delivery. Although they are pretty much the antithesis of Prog, Chrome also had some fantastic releases, most notatbly their 'Alien Soundtracks and Half Machine Lip Moves releases, which have been available on 1 CD for quite some time now.

No order here....

Gojira
Tool
Isis
Rush
Textures (Would they be considered progressive? Maybe more 'math-metal' or whatever it's called now).

There you go.

I don't think that's terribly accurate. I know a few people who love Piper and hate everything else, and a lot of big fans for whom the opposite is the case. It's a completely different album really, different song-writer and different ambitions.

I dig their early psychedelic stuff in general though I tend to switch off More around halfway through. Meddle is pretty good but I'll never forget the feeling of disappointment when I first heard it because it was the point where I felt they really grew distant from the band I knew and loved while I listened through their albums chronologically.

I know of/enjoy Mr. Bungle. I always hear them referred to as "experimental" though.

I don't know that these are prog rock per se, but +1 for The Gathering. I don't see too many fans of them (or any, but that just goes with the territory). Good list sir.

I think I pretty much just get to list the bands I actually know...
1. King Crimson (21st Century Schizoid Mand FTW)
2. Pink Floyd
3. Rush
4. ELP

Edit: Oh wait. Surely Porcupine Tree counts?
