How do I find someone who knows about Asperger's?

How do I find a professional who knows about Asperger's so that I can be evaluated and diagnosed? I can't just find it in the phone book. I live in Virginia, and the closest place that could have someone is the University of Virginia's hospital/health system, but I looked at their lists of doctors in neuropsychology/psychiatry, and none of them show anything related to autism. Are professionals familiar with the autism spectrum rare, so I would have to travel somewhere far?

Get in contact with your physician and meet with a councler. She/He will refer you to a Specialist. You will then take a 60-90 minute evaluation, and if needed a 6-8 hour one, too.
At least, this is my experience so far...

Have you tried to find a specialist through your county medical society?

Most specialists who specialize in Autism and Asperger's Syndrome can be found in big cities...if they exist...as that is where they can earn good salaries. You simply won't find someone in rural, farm country of America...unless they want a long commute to a big city.

I've been talking with my mom about it, and we're both trying to figure out where to go. I might see if my regular doctor could refer us somewhere, but I doubt he knows anything.

Psychiatrist/psychologist/physician are chartered/licensed, which means they must be on public lists. Find the reliant charter and look them up. There are some websites for the UK. Also there may be ASD specific sites that will be able to find specialist/centers in you area.

These people should know where you can go to get help in your local area. Hopefully they are closer to where you are.
