I've known some of them for decades - ADD ADHD IQ

Some more recently - AS ASD

Some are easy to figure out - HFA LFA

But there are others floating around on the WrongPlanet.net and it would be helpful to newbies like me to have a thread devoted to defining these acronyms.

I'm respectful that AS people and others don't want to be 'labeled' -- that's certainly true of my 22 year old AS/ADD/CP son. I'm just trying to learn the terms that get used on the WrongPlanet.net.

To make this thread most useful, please include your terms using the examples below and focus on the words they stand for without a definition or long discussion that might go with it. Thanks

ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder
ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
IQ - Inteligence Quotient
AS - Asperger's Syndrome
HFA - High Functioning Autism
LFA - Low Functioning Autism
CP - Cerebral Palsy

PDD-NOS - Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified

A good source for further definitions is Abbreviations.com.

psych - shorthand for "psychologist and/or psychiatrist" (difference being that a psychiatrist has to have an MD as well as a PhD)

ASD-Autistic Spectrum disorder...

also for a long time I thought that AS stood for Autistic Spectrum...as opposed to Apserger's Syndom :?

I guess ASD differentiates that.

autie -someone with classic autism
aspie -someone with aspergers
Autist,Autistic someone with a form of Autism, some use the terms only for Classic Autism.
NV -Non Verbal [though this doesn't mean fully non verbal to everyone, just like deafness isn't always fully deaf].
Makaton -a simpler form of sign language which is based on doing actions rather than words.
PECS -Picture Exchange Communication System-they are very basic pictures which are put together or on own to communicate with.
ASL/BSL -American/British Sign Language.
HI/VI -they are not Autism words but a few members here come under them-they mean hearing impaired or visually impaired.
ASC -Autism Spectrum Conditions- a different term used by some instead of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
BAP -Broader Autism Phenotype, its what a lot of people on the hf end of the spectrum but are too unimpaired for any of the diagnoses would probably come under.

I've seen AS used more commonly as Autism Spectrum than Asperger's Syndrome.
