I'm thinking about doing a Bachelor of Arts degree through distance education. I know that there are schools that offer a wide range of correspondence/online courses, but other than the University of Phoenix (which advertises a lot but doesn't really offer that much variety) and Athabasca University (a Canadian school with a ton of distance courses but a lot of focus on Canadian/indigenous issues) I haven't found any single school that offers the range of courses I'm looking for.

Do you know of any schools that offer a wide range of liberal arts courses by distance education? This could be a distance ed-only school or a school that runs regular on-campus courses but also offers courses by distance. I'm particularly interested in English literature courses, which are a lot more difficult to find than, say, psychology or accounting.

UMass Lowell offers a BA in Liberal Arts with a concentration in English. It can be done totally online and they have some decent courses like "Monster, Apes & Nightmares" and "Studies in Film". Every English department needs a 300-level film course. :) The school is fairly decent about accepting transfer credits or providing credit for existing work, if that applies to you. My husband is doing his BS online there and likes it.

The other university that I would look at is the University of Illinois. There was a story on NPR in November that talked about their program and it sounded pretty good. They have you take the general ed courses mostly elsewhere, but the English courses are online.

Happy learning!
