I think there must be some degree of distrust between to two species, but once they get to know and understand each other they maybe get on more. :)

If you get them both when they're very young, they will get along.

I agree. Someone made a book about that

Cat and dogs get along due to training, and being introduced at young ages.

In the wild, dogs for the most part are larger then cats, and the dogs hunting instinct tells it to go after smaller animals like rabbits, ducks ect. it is the same with cats hunt animals smaller then themselves like rats, mice, ect.

It is simply instinct

it depends on how you raise them, there's no inherent reason why they should hate each other. if you raise them together from a young age, they will love each other. if a dog has an as*hole owner who teaches him to chase cats, that's a different story. Dogs will do what you teach them. Cats will do whatever they want and will get along with whoever treats them with the respect they deserve.

Food seems to cause problems in the cat dog relationship.

different body language (maybe like AS / NT):

cat roll on her back: defence
dog roll on his back: submission
similar differences in using their tail for signals

dogs make contact right away, cats want to observe new ppl first.

but as mentioned by others, they can learn easy enough

food sometimes causes problems in the relationship between my two dogs. once finishes really fast and tries to steal the others food and then the other growls at the first one. no huge fights though.

for some reason one of my dogs likes to lick the ginger cat i have. it does not matter how many times the cat hits him or bites him, he keeps doing it until he gets bored, (which is quickly)
