Ngonz

I took Spanish for three years. Granted, I never paid much attention :P However, I did learn one thing. Chupacabras is feminine, so you'd say La Chupacabra, not El Chupacabra. El is male. ;)

Hola ngonz, yo pues la verdad ni chance de ver que otros foros hay sobre AS, de por sí apenas visito este jaja =P
Sí, lamentablemente hay pocos lugares donde hablar en español, por lo mismo de que

Espero que hayas pasado un excelente fin de año y pues que te vaya muy bien en este que apenas empieza (:

@NovaBat: hola (:
cabras (goats) is the plural of cabra (goat), which ends in A, so it should be female (in theory). In this case it's El, not La, not because it refers to the act of him or her sucking (chupa, which is genderless, chupo is also genderless BTW); anyway, it's El because that's the way the name stuck...
odd stuff, nevermind  =P

Saludos, computerlove,

Ngonz

It is el chupacabras and here is the definitive answer as to why. Chupacabras is a compound word, made up of a verb followed by a noun. In Spanish, when one makes that kind of compound word, it always appears to be plural (but isn't) and is always male.

chupar = to suck cabra = goat Hence, goat sucker or chupacabras.

Other examples are:

el cortacéspedes = lawn mower (cutting of lawn)

el sacapuntas = pencil sharpener (bringing out a point)

el lavaplatos = dishwasher (washing dishes)

There are many other examples. To make the word plural, just change "el" to "los".

And there you have it! Take it from a Spanish teacher. :)

Un buen sitio para practicar español (para esos que estén interesados en aprenderlo o mejorarlo) es Spanisdict.com. Ahí también hay unos foros donde pueden consultar todas sus dudas respecto al idioma.

Never ever say that in spanish speaking countries
(chorizo is synonim to the male part)

your thingy says mexico, ive never heard chorizo been used as such a slang in spain

could be the spanish reserve the word for the sausage only, since you cant even walk a step anywhere, without seeing chorizos hanging from a string from somewhere. enter grocery store, chorizos hanging in the background. enter a nightclub, chorizos, the library, chorizos, the hairdresser, chorizos

ill remember if i ever visit mexico tho!

what i wanna know tho, is how often foreigners have asked for some "polla frita" or something, that would be cool :]

I think that any word for sausage in any language is used as a synonym for that part of the male anatomy. That seems to be a universal concept. It is quite okay to ask for chorizo in a store or butcher shop when shopping. That is what it is, after all.

About 'polla frita' = polla definitely IS nasty slang for that part of the male body and should not be used--at least in Spain. I don't know about other Spanish speaking countries. Every country is a bit different.

The correct term for 'fried chicken' is the masculine form: 'pollo frito'. If you use the feminine form, you are asking for a 'fried you-know-what'.
