The next time you get a chance to talk to the young lady alone, pull out your quarter and ask if she'd like to go for 2 out of 3. This will give you information on whether she is at all interested in getting to know you. After all, she did agree to take the chance in the first place, so you can't be THAT repellant to her.

When you laid down the quarter and walked away without a word, she might have been too shy or confused to call you back. Think, if your positions were reversed, would you have been able/willing to call out to her to call her back?

All is not yet lost. Faint heart ne'er won a lady.

If some guy came up to me and tried to talk to me in the library I'd probably get pretty upset. I mean, if I'm sitting off by myself somewhere it's so I can concentrate reading or whatever. You sit in front of me, move around a bit, settle in like people do, it's going to really disrupt things for me. And I'm going to wonder if you're going to go on clearing your throat, shifting things around, maybe pulling out something to eat or a cell phone. Or if you're actually going to be quiet. Libraries are for quiet, you know.

The place to meet people to have intense discussions with is in clubs of like-minded people. There you can drive each other up the wall all you like.
