It looks cool but I'm a Kumdo Practitioner for over a year since January so I preffered the Way of the Sword.

aikido IS about sword technique.... originated during era of samurai and a lot of it is about how to deal with those sword attacks and originally--how to deal with all that armor you sword guys use :) it's very dynamical and fun

rewatch that video and imagine some of those guys comin in with swords... you can do pretty much the same stuff with people attackin you like that with swords

Actually protective gear is what we wear really.

I also look at wiki about Aikido.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aikido
It is most derived Kenijustu but its more of disarming and grappling martial art.

Kendo and Kumdo are also based off Kenijustu. Everyone has their own taste when it comes to martial arts.

I've done some aikido before. It's really not about kicking butt.
It all works on re-direction of forces to make somebody go down. Very little striking is involved if at all.

It makes sense because most martial arts are for self-defense instead of offense.

uh yeah... as did the samurai :P but it's heavy stuff and covers a lot of the joints... which is what aikido manipulates.. so earlier aikido is somewhat stylistic and more indicative of the sword-fighting-like nature

i just used the term kicking butt as a phrase... i realize most styles don't emphasize atemi (striking) but then, most aikido is wussy and sucks. it is all about momemtum and redirection, but atemi IS VERY important... i sincerely doubt you'd be very street effective if you didn't know proper atemi... im not saying to do too much... but i'll tell you (as a smaller person, myself)... i wouldn't try fighting without it.

that being said... i wouldn't say aikido is a standalone martial art for street-selfdefense either... we definitely do oth sorts of training to beef up other areas... some karate and grappling.

I've done Tae Kwon Do, and most of the techniques are also to do with self defence...

think i'm being taken a little out of context...... yes it's self-defense... but the stuff WORKS... if someone attacks me... i'm gonna plant them to the floor!

and as for the atemi.... it is very important especially for generating momentum... if someone say grabs you really hard ie- they aren't coming at with you with a fully committed attack that has a lot of it's own momentum... you use atemi to open a window to allow you to generate momentum and redirect and all that good stuff.

I prefer the Filipino martial arts myself, I feel they are a bit more practical in modern times. I've taken Kali and Panatukan, as well as several non-Filipino martial arts, and I just feel that the Filipino arts are more focused on real use than most others. Kali is also great because the sticks and daggers that are used have many modern approximations, and in the case of sticks, many improvised variants. Stick fighting can be adapted to blade fighting with a simple change of targeting, but as my chances of getting into a sword fight are slim, I'll stick to the sticks. I also like the emphasis on limb destruction found in Panantukan, since I feel that it's one of the fastest non-lethal ways to disable an opponent. Absent a firearm, it's pretty hard to fight with a broken arm.

aikido is incredible to watch, wasn't it used for training Star wars actors, and unfortunately inspired some fan boys
