I taught myself by learning to read 'tabs' ('tabulature'). It's pretty unsophisticated, but I loved it. The 'tabs' sheet music shows you where to put your fingures on the guitar.

Most guitar mags have this stuff.

I bought some great books from Hal Leonard publishing. They had Beatles books, U2 books, Zep books, G'n'R books.

I don't know what they carry now. Go here www.halleonard.com , or search 'guitar tabs' on Google (you'll probably end up at www.ultimate-guitar.com )

The 'tabs' thing is great for beginners but you'll never get to Juilliard with 'em.
