I JUST SAW IT and it's a beautiful train wreck of a movie! In fact, it's not so much a coherent movie as a romp through Spielberg's subconscious: there's the usual search for a father, some Cold War stuff (including a nuclear explosion that reminded me of "Empire of the Sun"), some von Däniken-style "Ancient Astronaut" stuff (including an ending that was strongly reminiscent of "Mission to Mars"), some "Catch Me If You Can"-type late 50s/early 60s period stuff... and again and again, long LONG stretches of expository dialogue that held together the thin plot.
What I liked: the sets were gorgeuos; Cate Blanchett, John Hurt and - surprisingly! - Shia LaBeouf were good; I found the tribute to Marcus Brody touching (after they turned him into a laughing stock in "Last Crusade", hmph ); the nuclear test was EXTREMELY impressive; and there were no, repeat NO space aliens involved.
