Define heavy. I listen to a fair amount of metal, but I'm not sure how to quantify "heaviness"

5IVE (Not the boy band, the one you seek is from Boston)
Daneva
Earth
Bathory
Celtic Frost (their 80's stuff)
Gorgoroth
Helios Creed
Zeni Geva
Sunn 0)))

These are bands I like, aside from ones you've already mentioned (if I recall correctly). My taste in metal is quite varied.

Sleep
Nebula - if you like Sleep, and Fu Manchu (early stuff only) if you like Nebula
Motorhead
Carpathian Forest
Evil Army
Nunslaughter
Macabre (murder metal = all songs about killers!!)
Slayer
Bathory
Celtic Frost ( = Glenn Danzig's favorite band)
Danzig
Entombed
Death Breath

You can also try exploring the world of hardcore. Old hardcore (Bad Brains, Negative Approach, etc. rocks). You might also like hardcore punk - from Black Flag to Poison Idea (whose intensely rocking record, Feel the Darkness, is playing loudly on my turntable right now) . . . Today, there's a lot of crappy "metalcore", but there are also certain bands in certain genres that blend the two successfully, depending on your taste. I like the metalish-crust-core. Yeah, and there are some non-crust-related forms of hardcore that involve some metal-ish-ness in a good way . . Wish I could be more helpful (like by making another list or 2), but my brain is too cluttered with knowledge of good music and I gotta go walk the dog.

Actually, I recommend reading lots of books and zines about metal, punk, and hardcore, and looking up YouTube videos for any band that sounds interesting to you. There's a lot out there!! !

One band beats them all: ORPHANED LAND *hail hail*

Orphaned Land are a metal band from Petah Tikva and Tel Aviv, Israel. They combine heavy metal with Middle Eastern music of both Jewish and Arab origins. When listening to an Orphaned Land record you will hear an incredible number of Middle Eastern instruments, put the sound on full volume and close your eyes to hear all the little details and it will be like a voyage through the Middle East. Apart from combining metal with authentic Jewish and Arab music, they also incorporate verses from the Bible, Torah and Quran in their songs (for example the outro to "Ocean Land" is an Islamic prayer chant calling Muslims for the prayers). They sing in English but also Hebrew, Arab and Yemeni. Orphaned Land try to build a bridge between the different cultures of the Middle East, and spread a message of peace between Muslims and Jews. A typical example of their creativity is a song like Norra El Norra, which is an old Arab folk tune they have written Hebrew verses for that praise the Torah.

One of the most unique bands on this planet and by far the most unique in the metal world. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I am into Middle Eastern culture alltogether so that obviously helps, but I am quite sure many people who are new to Arab music would still be very positively surprised :)

I also kinda like Marilyn Manson, Black Sabbath (mainly the oldest records) and some Rammstein songs.
I must say that sicne living in Germany and vastly improving my German, Rammstein have grown on me as I better understand the black humor and bizarre twists in their lyrics. I like their more recent stuff as well, songs like Moskau, Mein Teil, Sonne, ...

But none of them has the uniqueness of Orphaned Land.

I used to love metal when I was an angsty teen, but I guess I've sort of grown out of it...rarely listen to it anymore, and I never could stand listening to that stuff that people call "metal" today. Death metal, black metal, whatever you wanna call it...not my thing :x
