I love having music on too. I listen to everything (I don't have a perticular style). Usually when I'm doing something on my own I feel awkward, and like there's something missing in the room. So, I really don't stand silence either ...

I am a solitary, introverted, hermit type of person, but I do occasionally feel mild loneliness. My coping methods, including music help me deal with this, and other issues. It has a very calming effect. Some music can be very perky, like marches, polkas, etc., but still be calming, because instead of getting one too excited, they are just fun to listen to. Music can also calm and soothe animals.
I once shared a dog with my older brother, who I lived with at the time. He sometimes was out on errands/jobs/socialising/etc. for hours, which sometimes upset the dog. One such day, I had been playing nice music quietly in the background for hours, when my brother came home late in the evening, after having been out all day. He was too tired to spend any time with the dog, and went right to bed. The dog was very upset, as she had wanted to spend some time with him. I led her to her bed, and told her to go to sleep, and then started to get ready for bed then, too, and turned off the radio. This upset the dog even more. She came over to me and led me over to the radio, and jerked her head at it, to point to it. It was clear that she wanted me to turn the pretty music back on, so I did for a little while, until I was about to get into bed. Once I turned the radio back on the dog did settle down on her bed. By the time I was ready to climb into my own bed, she was calmed down enough for me to turn off the radio.
Before that time I had not realized that she had ever gotten anything out of the music I played. I am glad she did. Music is definitely good as one of the coping methods people should have, but as my anecdote shows, it can also help animals, too.
