NIN indie ?! NIN would be classified as industrial or metal by most people. Not that classifications matter that much, but how would NIN be indie?

I would also say Lamb are triphop in the purest meaning of the world. Great band though.

I love so many indie bands...
Here are a few I've seen live:
The Hold Steady
Modest Mouse
! !!
Vampire Weekend (still my favorite live performance ever)
Animal Collective (amazing show)
Jarvis Cocker
Titus Andronicus (had a nice little discussion with their awesome lead singer)
A Hawk and a Hacksaw
Dinosaur Jr. (Yeah, I was right up front with the bodysurfers)
The Apples in Stereo (Rob Schneider is awesome live)
Man Man (Craziest live show ever!)
Boris

My two favorite bands are Arcade Fire and Neutral Milk Hotel (In an Aeroplane Over the Sea is quite possibly the best album ever made)

from last fm they seem pretty cool but to me the name still sounds like something from Cyanide and Happiness (the web comic)

The Smiths, Pixies or Nirvana

I know these are crudely obvious choices, but c'mon!

They're an Albini band, and while I'm no Albini fan I might suggest them to someone into Big Black.

I don't have the muzziest clue how to figure out what's indie or in fact any genre, I'm as blind to it as some of us are to faces... but here are the ones I like that it seems no one has heard of around here:

The Might Be Giants (more popular, but far and away my favorite, and have been since the 80s when I'm sure they were indie)
Hugo
Flaming Lips

I don't understand what indie music is supposed to be. By my reasoning indie music should be by any singer or band that isn't signed on by a major record label, but there are plenty of bands termed 'indie' that have major label support. People often seem to use the term to refer to a genre of music, which doesn't make sense to me.

this is most delicious nerd session of indie music intellect...I LOVE IT!

I bear a flag for jill sobule. she never really got it off right, but she still makes music today even after that supermodel song :P try and look around for san francisco, and god save the internet. she makes really cool controversial music :)

I really really really love Beirut, listen to post cards from italy, it's so good. I love his sad gypsy vibe.

I've totally been getting into the errors, metric, crystal castles and justice lately.

My friends keep telling me to listen to MGMT but their just...meh to me :S

That must be Kent, it's a swedish rock band which is popular all over scandinavia, especially in sweden and norway, and this is their most famous song, "Nothing", yes, it's called "Nothing" or in swedish; "Ingenting", enjoy
