Why are routers so poorly made?

Mine is a Belkin FD9630-4 modem router, and yes it does get very hot. Some idiot designer put heat vents on the base of the product. Yes, ON THE BASE. Which typically would be covered up by whatever it's sitting on top of. So I got two beams of wood to sit on either side of the bottom of the product, to uncover the holes.

Keeping the firmware on the router up to date may help. My router (Netgear WGT624 v3) used to crash a lot, but now it hardly ever does, most likely due to bug fixes in the newer firmware versions.

The firmware is up to date. The last firmware update was 2007, and even though the router has an automatic update system, for some reason it doesn't work so I had to do it manually. It didn't change anything as far as I noticed except for the configuration interface.
