Try moving to Ontario, theres storms all the time in the summer.. or being in the praries is worse.
We have storms frequently in the summer, but this one was unusually severe. If I started a thread every time we had a storm, I'd wear my fingers out from typing!
Oh yeah, well storms are getting worse as the suns solar flares are going wild and getting closer to earth.. the ice on a couple of planet are melting so Earth isn't alone in this.. it ISN'T; however, due to the greenhouse affect.. thats a lie.
Solar flares have almost no effect on the weather. They can mess up stuff in and above the magnetosphere (i.e. satellites) but the amount of heat they produce that actually reaches the lower atmosphere is miniscule compared to the heat that fuels a thunderstorm.
Actually the city itself might have intensified the storm because so much heat gets retained by all the asphalt and buildings in the Phoenix area. It’s called the urban heat island effect. I looked at the radar loop and it does appear that the storms intensified a lot when they moved out of the desert and into the urban “heat island”. Plus the all the irrigation and planted vegetation increases the humidity above what it is in the surrounding desert. Extreme heat and humidity are the ingredients that make thunderstorms go berserk.

I'd hate to be living near the Gulf at this moment.
I heard they're evacuating New Orleans.

don't. even. get me. started. for three days all i've heard is arguing about whether or not we're leaving. i've heard the word mandatory evaaaacuation about 40 bajillion times already because SomeBody in this house keeps switching the tv to the news and turning up the volume pretty darn loud. everybody on my street is gone all because of this stupid mandatory evacuation. we're currently for updates on the hurricane...ya know, the real data, not the stupid news people blabbering mandatory evacuation and crazy to stay.
guess where we're evacuating to? a small(it has about 4 small rooms and a bathroom) house in baton rouge and i'm calling the kitchen for sleeping arrangements.

Yes, out heat island does have a big effect on the storms and on weather in general. The valley has grown rapidly and just within my lifetime (I'm 35) I've been able to see the changes in the weather. Apparently in this storm we had several cells converging on top of us.
Good luck to you, Tinky, and to everyone on the Gulf Coast. Your storms make ours look like a mild shower! Someone's started a good wishes thread in The Haven for those affected by Gustav.
