Online pornography will be blocked on American Airlines flights if a flight attendants union gets its way.
The Association of Professional Flight Attendants has asked American Airlines to explore ways to block passengers' access to adult Web sites while using a new in-flight wireless Internet service on transcontinental flights, union spokesman Frank Bastien said.
Mr. Bastien said that while the viewing of online pornography hasn't been a problem on flights so far, the union wants to eliminate the potential for future trouble.
"Why bring on one more issue in an already stressful environment?" Mr. Bastien said.
American Airlines began testing an in-flight wireless Internet system on 15 transcontinental flights in August. The system allows passengers to log on to the Internet at their seats, with no restrictions on what sites they can access, company spokesman Tim Smith said.
It's nothing new for passengers to view pornographic material at their seats during flights. People have been able to take adult magazines and DVDs onto flights without restrictions, and the union is not objecting to those materials. Crews have successfully managed to resolve instances of other passengers taking offense to such materials, Mr. Smith said.
"We always hope our customers will use good judgment on what they view while on board our aircraft, and the vast majority do just that," Mr. Smith said in a prepared statement.
Mr. Bastien said unrestricted Internet access for passengers could potentially put flight attendants in unusually delicate situations.
"Why should they [flight attendants] be put in the position to police, deal with the people offended and in a position to view objectionable material in their workplace?" Mr. Bastien said. "I don't know what the solution is, but we should try."

Personally, WHY do attendents serve alcohol drinks on flight? The cabin is a confined area and humans tend to behave erratically anyway. Alcohol just makes then more contentious. As if there aren't enough potential problems looming...geez.
And we're not allowed to bring a pocket knife or nail file?
Here's one not to do (trust me, security HATES this, been through it): Do not bring your chem notebook with drawings of formulas, etc. Just waaay too much explaining. I flew once just to Anchorage so I only had a modest carry-on.....with my notebook. I was ok, just had to sit in the office for an inordinate amount of time.
